CELLULITIS INFECTION

Cellulitis infection is a skin infection which affects mainly the subcutaneous and dermis tissue, it can also be defined as an infection of the deep skin layer and fat tissue layer placed underneath the skin. The cellulitis infection is categorized into orbital and periorbital, which are both characterized by swelling of the cells. Usually, this infection affects the legs, face or arms but in extreme condition it may appear in other parts of the body. It should be noted that, cellulitis infection has no age bracket but cuts across all ages although certain types like periorbital cellulitis is more rampant in children than in adults.

CAUSES, INCIDENCE AND RISK FACTORS OF CELLULITIS INFECTION:

The occurrence of cellulitis infection is triggered by improper treatment of minor traumas on one?s skin. An example of minor trauma on the skin can be a scrape but surgical incision is categorized as a major one. If this happen, the bacteria which dwells in normal cells of the skin invade the lower skin layers and cause infection in the subcutaneous layer.

The major strains of bacteria associated with this infection are staphylococcus and streptococcus. Although punctures, cuts and insect bites are known to be popular means of causing cellulitis infection, the contribution of other conditions cannot be overlooked.

The risk of this infection is higher if one has athlete foot which results to a dry skin with cracks. In addition, the vulnerability increases in children and adults suffering from chicken pox especially if they scratch the pocks. The burns in both second and third degree are not an exception either. This is because they make the skin to blister as well as open which may attract the infection. The bites of Some spiders such as brown recluse leads to cellulitis infection immediately.

The following conditions have also shown greater risks of cellulitis infection to individuals: Ulcers emanating from some diseases such as vascular disease or diabetes, wounds as result of recent surgery , use of medications which suppress immune system such as cortisteroids and having a past associated with peripheral vascular disease.

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS OF CELLULITIS INFECTION:

Cellulitis infection on one?s skin is characterized by fever, tenderness or pain of the affected part, inflammation or redness of the skin which increases with the spread of the infection, a rash or sore that starts abruptly and grows bigger in the first day, having a skin which has tight and glossy appearance and warmth in the red area. Other symptoms are loss of hair in the affected part, stiffness of joints due to inflamed joint tissues and vomiting and nausea.

The signs of cellulitis infection are: sweating, fatigue, warm skin, shaking or chills, muscle pains and feeling generally ill.

TREATMENT OF CELLULITIS INFECTION:

The commonly used treatments for cellulitis infection are: oral antibiotics, painkillers and close monitoring by the doctor. To minimize swelling, the infected area should be raised higher than one?s heart and rest while waiting for symptoms to improve.

If one has any of the following conditions they may be required to be in-patient: if one is critically sick; they have complications of blood pressure, fever etc., the infection is around their eyes, when even after completing antibiotic dosage the condition worsens, improper working of immune system due to HIV or cancer and if one has to be given antibiotics through vein (IV).
