Whisk And Foodity Both Raise Funds To Link Recipes To Grocery Stores

ikea-cookbook-recipe-ingredientsIt's been an interesting day for a developing market which seems so utterly niche as to be untrue. There really are startups out there linking recipes to supermarket so you can just buy the food you need to make the dishes. Niche, but potentially quite powerful. Two start-ups announced funding today in the UK. Whisk, a startup produced by a minor UK TV celebrity, has raised ?170,000 for a product that has yet to launch, while Foodity has secured over ?300,000 seed funding for a platform that's already being traded on and has customers after bootstrapping for two years.

What to Do After Winning the Big Lottery Jackpot - Estate Planning in ...

Jun 27, 2012 ?/? By: Stephen A. Mendel, Estate Planning Attorney ?/? Category: Asset Protection, Estate Planning, Financial Planning

You may have heard that a recent lottery made millionaires out of some people. Because the jackpot was a record $64o million it was actually difficult to avoid news about it. You may have dreamed about what you would do with the money if you ever won that much in the lottery. But, have you ever considered what the first thing you should do is? The first thing you should do is to speak to an attorney experienced in financial planning and estate planning.

The state lottery agencies like to make a big deal out of the winners and let everyone know who won the big jackpot. That might not be in your best interests. If people know you won the lottery, then you will start receiving a lot of solicitations for how you can waste that money. In many states, an experienced attorney can quickly set up a trust for you that allows you to claim your winnings anonymously. Beyond the anonymity factor that an attorney can help you with, if you are not used to having that type of money, an attorney can help you plan how you to take care of your new found wealth and what to do with it after you pass away.

If you ever do win the big jackpot, your first thought probably won?t be visiting an attorney to make sure that you have everything in order. However, you will be better off if you make it your second or third thought.

The Mendel Law Firm, L.P. is a member of the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys.

If you haven?t heard of Harvard Business Review you?re not a real business person, it?s that simple. Fortunately this app fills your iPad with the best business tips from the world famous business school.

iTalk Recorder

FileViewer

As the name suggests, this handy app is all about letting you view your important files and documents on the move. You can even download, organise and send files by email.

Drop Box

What you haven?t heard of Drop Box? This is the latest start up company sensation and their free package is all you need to effortlessly back up all of your files to the cloud and across multiple devices in real time. Load this on your PC, get the app on your iPad and never worry about emailing documents to yourself again.

Do a lot of networking? This app will scan any business card you are given and stores the info in your contacts book, simple.

VehiCal

If you spend a lot of time on the road this is the app for you, it lets you track your business mileage and various road expenses such as tolls, parking and fuel costs.

Money Supermarket

This app helps you to save money on loads of things, car insurance, business insurance, supplies, credit, iPad insurance?perhaps and various other finance related stuff.

Mint.com

You probably well know that finance is a big part of business, no matter what your business actually does. The Mint money management app reminds you when bills are due and helps you plan your income and outgoings. Positive cash flow is the lifeblood of your business, so this app is essential.

Facebook

oDesk

Having permanent staff is old hat and a thing of the past. The oDesk app which works with oDesk (the website) makes finding freelance staff from all over the world a doddle. Find and manage your freelancers and submit payment directly with your iPad.

Things

This is a simple to do list app, you know, for making to do lists. Something new come up? Add it to your list, prioritise, check off the jobs you have already done and get your business and your life organised.

Obama shows disregard for law on immigration | TheGazette

?

In March 2011, President Barack Obama addressed a town hall forum hosted by the Spanish-speaking TV network Univision.

He was asked this question: ?What if, at least, you grant temporary protective status, TPS, to undocumented students? If your answer is ?yes,? when? If your answer is ?no,? why not?? Undocumented students are the children of immigrant adults who entered the United States illegally.

This was his answer: ?There are enough laws on the books by Congress that are very clear in terms of how we have to enforce our immigration system that for me to simply through executive order ignore those congressional mandates would not conform with my appropriate role as president.?

Yet on June 15, Obama ignored the role of Congress in immigration policy (and his legal judgment) and issued an executive order giving protective status to young people who are in the United States illegally. His action shows that he has no real regard for our government system of checks and balances, our Congress or the rule of law.

Giving protective status to the children of illegal immigrant adults is another way for Obama to move the country, against its will, toward legalizing the 12 million-plus illegal immigrants who violated our laws by entering our country illegally. He has violated his constitutional role as president and should be removed in November.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Season Finale Recap: Things Fall Apart

Friendship bracelets, Pussycat dolls, Costa Rica, engagement rings, and cake-eating party crashers. This season of The Real Housewives of Orange County has had it all.

Tonight, on the season finale, notes are compared and confrontations are had.

Find out how it all goes down with THG's official +/- recap!

The Real Housewives of Orange County Cast

Sarah's still being a ball of drunken crazy about being picked on for breaking the cake. Over her. Minus 3.

In two signs of the Apocalypse, Terry calls Brooks "a really nice guy" (Minus 4) and Tamra decides to eat carbs (Plus 4).

To commemorate their five months of being friends, and as a tit-for-tat from the first episode, Gretchen gives Tamra a friendship bracelet. Each charm represents something special, but one heart represents how Tamra's unbreakable. Tamra tells Gretchen she loves her and thanks her for being such a good friend.

And then she cries again. While Tamra needs to lay off the booze tonight, it's a nice moment for these ladies. Plus 10.

Sarah's still whining about the cake and has the audacity to call Heather the rude one. Heather calls for the "heavy artillery" - a bunch of ladies in cocktail dresses and Terry and says it's time for Sarah to go. Plus 3.

Alexis tries to get louder than everyone else to bring about a resolution and Slade speaks up as the voice of reason. There's no need for a resolution. There's a need for Sarah to leave because that's what's been asked of her.

As they get Sarah to the door, the greatest line in all of reality television ever, or maybe just this season, falls out of Sarah's mouth: "Is this the world we live in? Over a bleeping piece of tiny cake?"

Yes, Sarah. Yes it is. Buh-bye. Plus 10.

Heather Dubrow Pic

The party's still rocking at Chateau Dubrow, and Vicki decides it's time to "apologize" to Ryan for bringing him up in her fight with Briana. But in Vickiwood, apologize means "talk about yourself and make things all about how everyone else is wrong." Minus 17.

She thinks Ryan will help her get Briana back, but Ryan says this is really Vicki's problem. Then she says "I love you. I don't know you and you took my daughter away, but I love you." Uh, thanks? Ryan loves you too? Minus 8.

Alexis is rambling on to Brooks about how Jim isn't there because he didn't want to be there. And who sneaks in the door but Jim!

Heather's Drama-Senses are tingling and Alexis is chipper over Jim's arrival. WAY chipper. Way more than just one cocktail chipper. Minus 11. Terry comments to a guest that Jim "grew a pair and showed up" right before he does the man-hug-handshake thing that men do.

In Camp Gunvalson, Jeana's daughter Kara sees Slade hug Tamra and is confused. Gretchen applies Tamra's lipgloss (by kissing her) and Vicki goes traipsing across the yard. She thinks Tamra and Gretchen's friendship is fake and calls Tamra a brown-noser. Let it go, Vicki. Gretchen's just more fun than you. Minus 7.

Slade offers up his services as bouncer again should Terry need them. He's prepared to send Jim packing if he needs to. Terry asks if they're okay and Jim says they'll talk next week.

Alexis says they should just talk now and in a complete douchebag move, Jim asks "really? Are you wearing the pants?" Minus 50. I just can't stand this man.

Jim and Terry go talk and Terry's straight up with Jim. He thinks Alexis is phony and inauthentic. Plus 5. Heather walks up and Jim nods in her direction and says this is the reason he wanted to talk next week.

Jim's got a problem with the women-folk. But, the talk continues. Until Tamra walks up. Then Jim's out. Minus 10, Tamra. This wasn't your conversation to have.

Alexis says Heather shouldn't have even been in the conversation and it should've just been Jim and Terry, man-to-man. Actually, sweetheart, it should've been YOU and Terry because Terry talked about you. But whatever.

Par-Tay

Alexis goes out to talk to Jim and Jim's pulling out of the driveway without her. She practically has to chase him down the driveway to get him to stop the car. Minus 12.

The gang's all at the table now. And the booze is flowing. Vicki toasts to the absent Alexis and Tamra rolls her eyes. Brooks challenges her, saying she gave Vicki the "Evil Eye," and picks a fight with Tamra on Vicki's behalf. Gretchen says a fight's been brewing between the two of them for months.

Tamra and Brooks start to argue and then Vicki tells Eddie to get control of Tamra, which causes Tamra to tell Vicki to stop letting Brooks tell her what to think, which makes Vicki stand up and get in Tamra's face.

Can we cut the cake already? Maybe these ladies need some sugar.

Vicki and Brooks prepare to leave and Tamra follows them to find out why they're leaving. Vicki shouts that Tamra's supposed to be her friend and how dare Tamra talk about Brooks and disrespect him and blah blah blah. Get a grip, Vicki.

Tamra goes to find Briana after Vicki and Brooks leave and they compare notes. Neither of them like Brooks. Tamra's crying. Briana's ready to stick Brooks on a plane to Siberia. Ryan goes back into the house to get Briana away from Tamra so that Tamra can't corrupt Briana while she and Vicki are "in a healing phase." Minus 4.

Heather goes out to get Vicki and Brooks and bring them back in for her special toast. Briana asks Vicki for Vicki's side of the story. Suddenly, it seems Vicki saw Tamra roll her eyes and she chooses Brooks over her daughter. They all head back into the party for the final toast. Minus 12.

Finally, we're cutting this damn cake.

The Real Housewives of Orange County Finale Pic

Heather explains why they're all there - shockingly, it wasn't for the drama - she's changed her name legally and wants to thank her friends, new and old, for coming out to support her. Heather's classy. I like her. Plus 30.

In the worst Vicki moment so far, she muscles her way into the circle to say, basically, "Congrats Heather. When I'm attacked, I fight back and I'm leaving and I'm choosing my man." I'm surprised she didn't drop a "my love tank is full" for good measure. Minus 20.

Heather's big surprise of the night - diamonds in the champagne glasses - goes over well. Tamra gets the lucky flute. Now she's got a new rock to match the one Eddie gave her in Bora Bora.

Closing notes:

  • Tamra asks Heather to do shots. Not a good idea, Tamra. Heather says they don't do shots. Tamra calls her Fancypants. In love, of course.
  • Heather's still opening up a restaurant.
  • Eddie asks Ryan, Tamra's son, to be his best man when Eddie and Tamra tie the knot. Tamra needs another drink.
  • Briana says that she and Vicki's relationship will really continue to suffer as long as Vicki keeps choosing Brooks.
  • Briana and Ryan had a wedding for their friends and family. Briana's also six months pregnant.
  • Tamra and Gretchen are closer than Gretchen and Alexis.
  • Gretchen doesn't want to get married, but she does want a baby. Slade's having his vasectomy reversed.
  • Vicki and Brooks have broken up and gotten back together since the finale was taped.
  • Alexis is happy with her career and her family but not her friends. She and Jim are opening a trampoline park.

For Queen Elizabeth, a Google doodle of diamonds and doggies

In a crowning achievement, Queen Elizabeth gets a Diamond Jubilee Google doodle that honors key symbols of her reign ? and offers just a glimpse of the vast amount of jubilee kitsch on tap.

A Google doodle Saturday in the UK celebrates the Queen's diamond jubilee.

Queen Elizabeth graces the front page of Google today in the UK in a doodle marking her diamond jubilee, offering the rest of the world but a glimpse of the playful pop art and consumer kitsch on display here in Britain.

Scots guardsmen cupcake toppers, union jacks on toothpicks, ice queen scoops. Bunting: enough to string together the old empire. Royal photos on thimbles, spoons, tea cups, shot glasses, egg cups, tea towels ? the usual tat, as the Brits say. Jubilee thongs? Yes.

Then there?s the cleverness contest surrounding the WWII-era slogan, ?Keep Calm and Carry On.? Written on a women's compact: ?Keep Calm and Powder On.?
Comparatively, Google?s doodle is an understated affair. The letter O?s are diamonds, symbolic of the 60th (diamond) anniversary on the throne. The E sits as a jewel in the queen?s crown. The queen appears in two-dimensional contour; her beloved corgis, however, look ready to leap off the page.

The playful riffs on royal themes reflect the generally favorable mood toward the royals of late.

A YouGov poll last month found 67 percent agreeing the monarchy is good for Britain, and 86 percent approve of Queen Elizabeth. This is up from the days when her children's divorces dominated the headlines and her slowness to show emotion over the death of Princess Diana frustrated many.

Still, the public mood is not really one of royal reverence. Britons are in party mode at the start of a long weekend ? Monday and Tuesday being holidays as part of the four-day official jubilee celebration. Many Londoners took the chance to flee on summer vacations, as foreign and British tourists crowd into the city for events that include Sunday?s royal family flotilla on the Thames and Tuesday?s carriage procession.

Among the street art for the crowds will be the construction Sunday of a 94-sq.-ft. portrait of Queen Elizabeth made from 3,120 squares of cake ? one for each week of her reign.

German-born baker Gerhard Jenne came up with the idea. Mr. Jenne dipped each piece of lemon cake into one of 24 frosting colors, turning each into a pixel of this icing illustration.

Jenne?s a fan of the queen, but not so much so that he feels the need to become her subject even 30 years after moving to London. He doesn?t expect to meet her on Sunday, when he publicly arranges the cake squares into the portrait.

?It?s very interesting how the queen has changed. Even from 30 years ago, [the royals] are much closer to the people now,? he says. ?You almost feel like she might come see you?. There could just be a 1 in 40 million chance.?

After spending hundreds of hours on the cake, he expects it to be gobbled up within 20 minutes when it?s opened up to the crowds.

Some customers in his Konditor & Cook bakeries have asked him if it?s proper for an image of Her Highness to be eaten.

?I just said yes, it?s fine by me. At the end of the day, it?s a cake, it?s a bit of fun. And she seems like a humorous person.?

An earlier version of this story incorrectly attributed the phrase "Keep calm and carry on" to the British royal family.

Facebook draws user ire with email switcheroo

In yet another change that irked users, Facebook has replaced the email address you picked to display on your profile page when you signed up for the online social network with an (at)facebook.com address. (AP) ? In yet another change that upset users, Facebook has replaced the email addresses users chose to display on their profile pages with (at)facebook.com addresses.

Previously, users may have displayed their personal yahoo.com or gmail.com address to let people know how to contact them outside of Facebook. Now, Facebook has hidden those addresses and put a Facebook email listing in its place.

The changes raised users' suspicions. By hiding other email addresses Facebook can keep its already-captive audience even more captive. Sending an email to a Facebook.com address will land the email in the messages section of a user's Facebook profile. The more people use Facebook to communicate, the more the company can target ads based on the conversations they have on its platform ? just as Google targets ads to Gmail users based on text in their emails.

"They've got an email service that no one is using," said Forrester analyst Nate Elliott. Getting people to send emails to and from Facebook deepens people's connection to the site, he added. "This is a way of encouraging use ? it's just a rather crude way."

The email change was first pointed out by bloggers over the weekend and publicized by media outlets Monday. The exposure led to gripes from users, mostly on their Facebook pages and on Twitter.

In a statement, Facebook said it is giving users Facebook.com email addresses "because we find that many users find it useful to connect with each other, but using the Facebook email is completely up to you." It added that the email address people use to log in to Facebook or receive notifications won't change.

Users who are bothered by the change can reset their profile. Facebook didn't delete the previously displayed email addresses. So, to revert back to the original address, click on the "about" section of your profile. Once there, look for "Contact Info" and click on the edit icon on its right hand corner. There, you can change who can see your email address and which email addresses they can see.

The Facebook.com email address allows users to communicate with outside email addresses via Facebook, but it's unclear how many people use the feature. Popular as Facebook has been with more than 900 million monthly users, its messages and posts have not replaced email, texting and other forms of communication. According to comScore, Facebook visitors spent an average of 381 minutes (or 6.35 hours) on the site last month.

The company started giving its users Facebook.com email addresses back in 2010, but only in the last few months has it begun to display them on people's profiles. In an announcement that went largely unnoticed, it said in April that it was "updating addresses on Facebook to make them more consistent" across the site. To Facebook consistency meant switching everyone to a Facebook.com address.

Over the weekend, Facebook added a feature that lets users change what contact information is displayed on their Timeline directly from the Timeline ? without having to go into their account settings. In rolling out this change, the company defaulted everyone's displayed address to Facebook.com.

"Ever since the launch of Timeline, people have had the ability to control what posts they want to show or hide on their own timelines, and today we're extending that to other information they post, starting with the Facebook address," Facebook spokeswoman Jillian Stefanki said in an email late Monday.

Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook is well known for making changes to its website that occasionally irritate users. Some users are still holding off on switching their old profile pages to the Timeline, which lists users' shared life events, updates and photos in chronological order, dating back to their birth. In 2006, there was a big uproar over a now-central feature of Facebook, the news feed that tells people what their friends are doing.

"It's pretty emblematic of Facebook's mode of operation. Take action and apologize later," said Debra Aho Williamson, an analyst at research firm eMarketer. "They seem like they pulled the trigger without telling everybody. It's going back to the way they were operating a few years ago."

Stubborn Fool: 30 Day Writing Challenge:A Roadblock

We all suffer from writer's block at one time or another. A roadblock. Often we put to much pressure on ourselves (A 30 day Challenge perhaps) or we set unrealistic goals.

We are all creators. Whether at work or at school, you blog, you tweet.

If you've been at it long enough, you have your own solutions to breaking through writer's block. A simple solution is a change of pace, a breath of fresh air or a cup of joe. Sometimes we are tied to our?computers?and can't take that walk. What do you do? Here are a few ideas I put together so you can break through that roadblock.

  1. Take a break - a few minutes or a few days. Listen to music or read a book. Create ideas. Stop forcing ideas.
  2. Use your language tools - grab a thesaurus, find that word to change things up and get you over the hump
  3. Develop Ideas - go through your old notes, saved email, diaries or journals.?
  4. Communicate - Speak to people, write to people, ask them questions.
  5. Jot - Don't write, jot down notes, scribble ideas, create a flowchart.?
  6. And if that doesn't work, take a news story that intrigued you and rewrite it, add your own perspective.
Mike and Nicky over at We Work for Cheese have forced invited us to participate in this?30 Day Creative Writing Challenge?. Today is Day 2, the theme is A Roadblock. Here are some of the?other?participants.
