NBA scores: Hawks climb past Bucks, Wizards continue rampage

In Saturday's NBA action, the Wizards continued their hot play with a victory over the Rockets and the Hawks edged the rival Bucks in J.J. Redick's Milwaukee debut. Plus, Danny Granger returned to action.

Saturday featured seven NBA games, many of them close. Let's dig in.

Hawks 103, Bucks 102
As long as Josh Smith is going to stick around, the Hawks might as well win, right? Atlanta is 2-0 since the deadline, notching a one-point win over the Bucks on Saturday. Al Horford picked up the game-winner -- a half-hook bank shot, of course -- to cap a 23-point, 11-rebound night. The Jeff Teague-Devin Harris backcourt outplayed Milwaukee's Brandon Jennings-Monta Ellis pairing, too. The Hawks duo scored 44 on a .692 eFG with 13 assists and three turnovers; the Bucks tandem had 25 points on .442 eFG with 15 assists and six turnovers.

In his Milwaukee debut, J.J. Redick was strong. He had 16 points on 4-9 shooting and seven assists against two turnovers. And yes, Jim Boylan did give us the three-guard lineup we've been dying to see since Thursday: the Bucks' lineup for the final four minutes featured Jennings, Ellis, Redick, Ersan Ilyasova and Larry Sanders. The Bucks led by five when Boylan put in Jennings for Mike Dunleavy. Four minutes later, Milwaukee had a one-point loss. This is going to be awesome.

Wizards 105, Rockets 103
Be wary, opponents: Washington is now 11-4 against teams with winning records since January 7. It's a completely different team over the past month, as Saturday's gutty two-point win shows. The Wizards' defense and offense both had slow starts, and Houston led by 11 at the half. But the Wizards plugged away to make it a game, and dominated defensively in the fourth. The Rockets shot 13-28 (.464) on threes in the first half and 6-18 (.333) in the second. The Wizards did most of their damage in the paint, but Bradley Beal was the top scorer with 21. James Harden racked up 27.

Pacers 90, Pistons 72
Danny Granger's back! That is not, however, the reason the Pacers blew out the Pistons, though. In 18 minutes off of the bench, Granger was 1-10 from the floor. Luckily for Indiana, Detroit was basically that bad top to bottom, shooting 33 percent for the game and racking up an offensive efficiency of roughly 78. George Hill led Indy with 17 on 7-10 shooting.

Clippers 107, Jazz 94
On a team with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin, it's Caron Butler and Lamar Odom getting the job done. What a world. Butler had 21 on 7-13 shooting and Odom added 18 off of the bench. The Jazz missed an opportunity to extend their standings lead over the Rockets.

Heat 114, Sixers 90
Thirty-three points on 14-18 shooting from Dwyane Wade, no big deal.

Nuggets 113, Bobcats 99
Denver's big men got the job done efficiently: Kenneth Faried scored 15 on nine shots and JaVale McGee scored 17 on 10. Byron Mullens and Bismack Biyombo, meanwhile, shot 4-17.

Cavaliers 118, Magic 94
How bad was this game for Orlando? Kyrie Irving and Alonzo Gee did this in the first quarter:

Austrian Yemen hostage appeals for ransom in video

VIENNA (Reuters) - An Austrian man taken hostage in Yemen in December has appeared in a video posted on YouTube, saying he would be killed if ransom money was not paid to a Yemeni tribe within a week.

Pictured with what appeared to be an AK47 automatic rifle pointed at his head, Dominik Neubauer said he was in good health and appealed to the Yemeni and Austrian governments and the European Union to give his hostage takers what they wanted.

"Mum, Dad, Lucas, Angela, I love you more than anything. Up until now I am in good health," the 26-year-old Arabic studies student said in the video posted on February 21. (http://r.reuters.com/jux26t)

Neubauer was snatched along with a Finnish couple by tribesmen in the center of the capital Sanaa on December 21, according to the Yemeni government. Yemen has said the three were later sold to al Qaeda members and transferred to the small town of al-Manaseh south of the capital.

A spokesman for the Austrian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday the government was acting on the assumption the video was genuine, and was in intensive contact with the Yemeni authorities and also with the Finnish government.

"This is the first sign of life we have from Mr Neubauer," he said.

He said Austria would not allow itself to be blackmailed, and said there was no concrete group that had made itself known as the hostage-takers.

The spokesman added that the ministry had received the video on Saturday. He declined to say where the ministry had got it from.

"We want to see the return of a healthy hostage," he said, adding that the foreign, interior and defense ministries and the chancellery had been in crisis talks on Saturday that would likely continue on Sunday.

The spokesman said he did not know whether Neubauer was still together with the Finnish hostages.

The Finnish Foreign Ministry said the appearance of the video did not increase the risks for the Finnish couple. "According to our information, no similar threat has been published on the Finnish couple," a spokesman said.

"The time limits are common in these kind of demands, and often they are flexible. There is no need to draw too many conclusions over this," he said.

Finland has several officials in Yemen working on the case.

Yemen last month suspended a military operation against al-Qaeda-linked militants in al-Manaseh while tribal leaders tried to secure the release of the three hostages.

The army had begun an offensive, in which about 8,000 soldiers were taking part, after the militants rejected demands to release them.

Formation of nanoparticles can now be studied molecule-by-molecule

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Atmospheric aerosol particles affect our climate by slowing down the global warming. After years of studying the international research group led by Academy Professor Markku Kulmala from the University of Helsinki, Department of Physics, Finland has succeeded in developing measurement techniques that allow detection of aerosol nucleation starting from the formation of clusters from vapor molecules, and the growth of these clusters into aerosol particles.

The results are published in the journal Science on the 22th of February 2013.

The study combines the cycles of sulphur, nitrogen and carbon in the ecosystem, as it shows that the molecular clusters need sulphuric acid, amines and oxygenated organics for growth. When the clusters reach a size of 1.5-2 nm, their growth increases considerably. The measurements were conducted at the University of Helsinki SMEAR II (Station for Measuring Forest Ecosystem-Atmosphere Relations) measurement station in Hyyti?l?, southern Finland, which is among the most comprehensive stations in the world for atmosphere and biosphere research.

During the last five years, the researchers at the University of Helsinki Physics Department have developed a Particle Size Magnifier (PSM), which is the first particle counter able to detect clusters and particles as small as 1 nm in diameter. The instrument is commercially available through the spin-off company Airmodus. The scientists have also put effort into developing mass spectrometric methods for measuring the composition of the recently born clusters. The results in this study would not have been achieved without this technical development.

Professor Kulmala predicted the existence of neutral molecular clusters already in the year 2000 and their growth mechanisms in 2004.

He says:-Years of systematical research are now bearing fruit. My theoretical predictions have been proven to reflect the reality.

He stresses that knowledge of the formation and growth mechanisms of nanoparticles is needed for understanding the interactions within the climate system. Assessing the global impact requires an extensive data bank and a world-wide observation network.

Samsung Series 7 Chronos trickles into US stores

DNP Samsung Series 7 Chronos trickles into US stores

After whetting our appetite at CES, Samsung's updated Series 7 Chronos is slowly squeaking its way into US retailers. Spotted at Best Buy for $1,200, this 21mm dynamo packs a 2.4GHz Intel Core i7 3635QM CPU and an AMD Radeon HD 8870M GPU along with a 15.6-inch touchscreen. While this lean, mean, Windows 8 machine's streamlined design and spec sheet are impressive, such adornment comes at a price. Absent from the Chronos' fine engineering is room for an optical drive, so DVD and Blu-ray enthusiasts be warned. However, should this caveat not apply to you, then by all means you have our blessings to check out Sammy's new up-and-comer.

[Thanks, Noah]

Boston Grapples With The Threat Of Storms And Rising Water

Christopher Joyce/NPR

The Boston Tea Party museum sits right on the edge of the harbor. With rising sea levels and the increasing threat of strong storms, buildings like these are at particular risk of flooding.

Christopher Joyce/NPR

Since the drubbing that Superstorm Sandy gave the Northeast in November, there's a new sense of urgency in U.S. coastal cities. Even though scientists can't predict the next big hurricane, they're confident that a warmer climate is likely to make Atlantic storms bigger and cause more flooding.

Cities like Boston are in the bull's-eye.

From atmospheric scientist Kerry Emanuel's 6th-floor office at MIT, you can look out at Boston and the snow-covered Charles River as it snakes through the city down to the harbor. It's a beautiful place, located where three rivers meet the Atlantic. Unfortunately, a lot of that water wants to get into the city. Here's why:

First, the Atlantic is warming, Emanuel says, and that puts more water vapor up into the air. More water vapor, he says, "means that a given hurricane is likely to rain much more in the future than it does today. That's a big deal because a lot of the deaths and injuries and loss of property, and so forth, in these storms comes from freshwater flooding produced by rain."

Then there's the problem of rising sea levels. Emanuel says a warming climate is likely to change wind patterns that push ocean water and currents around. "And those wind patterns can make a difference locally to how high the sea level is," he says. "So, for example, sea level is forecast to rise faster along the U.S. East Coast than it is globally."

In a big storm, you get three rivers flooding from one side, and an ocean surging in from the other. They meet in Boston Harbor.

"This is something that we're worried about," says Emanuel. "You're producing more water in the rivers, but the water, when it gets down to the sea, doesn't have any place to go because sea level is elevated."

You can see the problem by strolling along the Boston Harbor waterfront. It's a busy place, with giant office buildings, chic restaurants and the Boston Tea Party Museum, where they re-enact 18th century history and throw more tea into the harbor, just for fun. The high-rises, as well as 19th and even 18th century buildings of brick, are built right up to the edge of the water. There's not really much room from the edge of the buildings to the green harbor water.

Those same features that make Boston Harbor a popular place for business and tourism make it especially vulnerable in a big storm.

Several city neighborhoods, with buildings dating back hundreds of years, are particularly at risk. Vivien Li, who runs the Boston Harbor Association, lives in one. "Many of them are very solidly built," she says, "but the mechanicals and the boilers and such are in the basement level, and that will be the problem." By mechanicals, she means electric switches, water pumps and fuel tanks.

Vivien Li heads the Boston Harbor Association. Her organization is advising property owners in the city on how to prepare for potential flooding.

Christopher Joyce/NPR

Li is trying to make the city more resilient. This month, her group issued a study of what future storms could do to Boston.

The report notes that Sandy just grazed Boston. New maps show that if such a storm hit Boston directly, it would flood 6.6 percent of the city. And if the sea level rises by 2 1/2 feet, as many scientists say it could by 2100 or even sooner, the ocean would flood 30 percent of the city.

Li recalls the response to the study she got from the owners of the city's Harbor Towers high-rises. "If your projections are correct," they told her, "sea level rise could knock out the boilers for two of the largest residential towers in Boston. That's not going to be good for those residents."

The association's study advises property owners to identify low-lying doors or vent openings, underground garages and basement power equipment, and figure out how to protect them from flooding.

That will cost a lot. But Li expects people will pay it rather than leave. "The issue of retreating right now is not palatable for political reasons," she says, "and I frankly think a lot of the residents don't want to move. ... Particularly a lot of older people are saying, 'You know, this is where I've lived all my life.' "

The city government, in the meantime, has issued a questionnaire to anyone proposing to build in Boston. Brian Swett is head of environment and energy for the city. "Now we are asking building [owners]: How are you preparing for the realities of sea level rise? Of increased magnitude of stormwater? We're making sure that you have ... emergency preparedness plans, water tightening your building. And so how do you deal with entrances to garages or to lobbies ... subway entrance platforms?"

As Boston flood zones expand, it will cost more to build in the city. Swett, who worked in real estate development prior to City Hall, says it should. He also believes builders are willing to pay the price. "I'm not saying at all that we retreat from the waterfront," he says. "But it's inherently more expensive. It's also inherently more valuable."

But no matter how well property owners prepare, they could still lose it all as climate changes. One reason many are willing to stomach that risk is that governments may bail them out. Swett, Li and MIT's Emanuel all agree that state and federal flood insurance and disaster relief hide the true risk of coastal development. Emanuel calls it a taxpayer subsidy for risky behavior. "It's as though your health provider would give you a break on your premium if you could prove to them that you would smoke three packs a day," he says. "It's that crazy."

Emanuel says it will stay crazy until people get tired of paying the bill for more storms like Sandy.

Pakistan hands management of strategic Gwadar port to China

Source: Reuters

China took over management on Monday of Pakistan's Gwadar port, en route to key Hormuz Straits oil shipping lanes, in a move which has prompted nerves in India about its fellow Asian giant's growing strategic clout.

China financed more than 80 percent of the $248 million development cost of the port on the Arabian Sea, as part of a plan to open up an energy and trade corridor from the Gulf, across Pakistan to western China.

When complete, the port could be used by the Chinese Navy, analysts say, and Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony told reporters on February 6 that Chinese control of the port was "a matter of concern."

Indian policy-makers are wary of a string of strategically located ports being built by Chinese companies in its neighborhood, as India beefs up its military clout to compete.

Coast Guard identifies cause of cruise ship fire

ATLANTA (AP) ? A leak in a fuel oil return line caused the engine-room fire that disabled a Carnival cruise ship at sea, leaving 4,200 people without power or working toilets for five days, a Coast Guard official said Monday.

Cmdr. Teresa Hatfield addressed the finding in a conference call with reporters and estimated that the investigation of the disabled ship, the Carnival Triumph, would take six months.

Hatfield said the Bahamas ?where the ship is registered, or flagged ? is leading the investigation, with the Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board representing U.S. interests in the probe. The vessel was in international waters at the time of the incident.

She said investigators have been with the ship since it arrived Thursday in Mobile. Since then, she said, interviews have been conducted with passengers and crew and forensic analysis has been performed on the ship.

She said the crew responded appropriately to the fire. "They did a very good job," she said.

In an email after Monday's conference call, Coast Guard spokesman Carlos Diaz described the oil return line that leaked as stretching from the ship's No. 6 engine to the fuel tank.

A Carnival Cruise Lines spokesman said in an email Monday that the company agrees with the Coast Guard's findings about the fire source.

Andrew Coggins, a former Navy commander who was a chief engineer and is now a professor at Pace University in New York and an expert on the cruise industry, said the fire could potentially have been serious.

"The problem is the oil's under pressure," he said. "What happens in the case of a fuel oil leak where you have a fire like that is it leaks in such a way that it sprays out in a mist. In the engine room you have many hot surfaces, so once the mist hits a hot surface it will flash into flame."

If the crew hadn't reacted quickly and the fire suppression system hadn't worked properly, he said, "the fire from the engine room would have eventually burned through to other parts of the ship." Engine room fires that can't be suppressed generally result in the loss of the entire ship, he said.

The Triumph left Galveston, Texas, on Feb. 7 for a four-day trip to Mexico. The fire paralyzed the ship early Feb. 10, leaving it adrift in the Gulf of Mexico until tugboats towed it to Mobile. Passengers described harsh conditions on board: overflowing toilets, long lines for food, foul odors and tent cities for sleeping on deck.

Hatfield said investigators from the Coast Guard and NTSB would stay with the ship until about the end of the week, then continue work at their respective offices. She said the investigation will look further at the cause of the fire and the crew's response, as well as why the ship was disabled for so long.

Last week, a team of six NTSB investigators were in Mobile trying to determine the cause of the fire. An NTSB spokesman said then that the agency could take information developed from the probe and use it to make recommendations for improving cruise ship safety.

Passengers interviewed after the cruise complained about confusion in the immediate aftermath of the fire about whether to evacuate their rooms as well as poor communication about what was happening.

Carnival CEO Gerry Cahill apologized to passengers late last week.

(AP Photo/Sesame Workshop)

(AP) ? Nearing 1 billion views on YouTube, "Sesame Street" is headed for Justin Bieber territory.

The children's program is closing in on the kind of rarified digital milestone usually reserved for the likes of pop stars and cat videos. "Sesame Street" will soon pass 1 billion views on YouTube and it's celebrating the mark with a campaign to put itself over the hump.

"Sesame Street" on Thursday will post a video featuring the character Telly Monster, urging viewers to click the show past the final 20 million views and unlock a "top secret video." Naturally, for the nonprofit children's series, it's a teaching moment, too. Don't be surprised if Count von Count shows up to ponder such a big number.

For "Sesame Street," the milestone ? a first on YouTube for a nonprofit or U.S. children's media outlet ? reflects the increasingly multimedia nature of kid entertainment. Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch are now about as likely to be watched on an iPad, phone or laptop as they are on PBS.

"We have this theory that if we get content on multiple platforms and devices, it gives kids and families a chance to reinforce and experience the curriculum multiple times," says Terry Fitzpatrick, executive vice president of content and distribution for Sesame Workshop, who emphasizes videos are best co-viewed with child and parent. "It blows me away to think about how popular and strong a platform (YouTube) has become for us."

"Sesame Street," a mainstay on PBS since 1970, launched its YouTube channel in 2006, but has continually expanded its mindfulness of online and mobile viewers.

Sesame Workshop last year integrated its digital media group into its TV production, so that digital and interactive elements are considered from the start of an idea. Its most popular video is "Elmo's Song," which has been watched nearly 86 million times since being uploaded in 2009. More recently, another PBS hit, "Downton Abbey," was parodied in "Upside Downton Abbey," a video where British muppets have trouble drinking tea and eating crumpets because, well, they're upside down.

Caitlin Hendrickson, strategic partner manager for YouTube's educational realm, YouTube EDU, says that education is one of the fastest growing content categories on the Google Inc.-owned site. "Sesame Street" reaching 1 billion views, she said in a statement, "is proof of their outstanding leadership in this space and their creative use of YouTube."

Jewish Professor of Linguistics support of David Ward MP's criticism of Israel

10:58 am, Sun 10 Feb 2013

Noam Chomsky

World-renowned Professor of Linguistics, Noam Chomsky, has come out supporting David Ward?s comments. He has said:

?I agree that there's nothing remotely anti-Semitic in his remarks, which are in fact familiar in Israeli discussions.?

Zionists have continued to hound David Ward and the Lib Dems to take action, inflating the issue to much more than what it is. This is, of course, the job of the Zionists, even if it works against the party?s interest. In this case, it certainly does. In reality, it is much to do about nothing.

Chomsky?s comments, however, must be illuminating to the Owen Jones & Mehdi Hasan, who had commented that Ward?s comments were anti-Semitic. Would they argue with a man who understands a thing or two about language?

David Ward has clarified numerous times what he was saying and if that is still not enough, he clarified once more:

"The intention behind my comments was to start a genuine discussion about Israel's treatment of Palestinians and how the Israeli government seemingly acts with impunity for its actions in Gaza and the West Bank.?

Mr Jones & Mr Hasan already know that Zionists rampantly overplay the anti-Semitic card to shut down any attempt to bring Israel?s crimes to public scrutiny. By reacting to the Zionists narrative in the way they did, they have effectively squashed David Ward?s attempt to have a real debate about Israel impunity for its actions as they are some of the few voices of reason left who talk about issues that Zionists would rather not have discussed. They are no doubt very pro-Palestinian and we hope that they will come out in support of the MP as it is widely understood that he was not demonising an entire community.

We cannot allow Zionists to dictate the narrative of his comments as he is trying to get a real discussion on an issue that is dear to us all.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: ABC News' Rick Klein: " President Obama Hits Emotional High Note on Guns, not Jobs" President Obama brought his agenda back to the basics in the first State of the Union address of his second term, with a stripped-down economic prescription that bore the scars of four years marked by frustration. But where he's best-positioned to define his presidency is where he found his strongest emotion. Obama's speech will be remembered for high points that drew on the imagery of the audience and this moment in time. LINK

The Wall Street Journal's Jared A. Favole and Melanie Trottman: " Obama Nominates Recess Appointees" President Barack Obama has nominated two of the recess appointees he installed on the National Labor Relations Board last year, setting the stage for a likely battle with Senate Republicans over their confirmations. The White House said Mr. Obama has nominated former Democratic Labor Department official Sharon Block and former Democratic union lawyer Richard Griffin Jr. to the board. LINK

The Washington Times' Dave Boyer: " On the road, Obama told to go home" As President Obama took to the road Wednesday promoting his plan for more federal aid for manufacturers, an industry official said the president could help businesses far more by agreeing on a budget deal with Congress. Jay Timmons, president and CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers, told business leaders in Detroit that the administration's inability to compromise with Republican lawmakers on looming budget cuts is causing manufacturers to pull back from hiring and expansion plans. The latest fiscal deadline in Washington is March 1, when $85 billion of spending cuts are due to take effect. LINK

The New York Times' Nicholas Kulish and Jackie Calmes: " Obama Bid for Europe Trade Pact Stirs Hope on Both Sides" President Obama's call for a free-trade agreement between the United States and the European Union has unleashed a wave of optimism on both sides that a breakthrough can be achieved that would lift trans-Atlantic fortunes, not just economically but politically. LINK

SENATE: The Hill's Jeremy Herb: " Reid challenges GOP to filibuster Hagel nomination for Pentagon" Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) challenged Republican senators Wednesday to launch a filibuster against President Obama's nominee to lead the Pentagon, former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.). Reid scolded Republicans for making the threat, and set up a vote to end debate on Hagel for Friday. "This is first time in the history of our country that a presidential nominee for secretary of Defense has been filibustered," Reid said on the Senate floor. "What a shame." LINK

The Los Angeles Times' Michael Memoli: " GOP prevents vote on Hagel as Defense secretary" Senate Republicans refused to allow a vote Wednesday on the nomination of Chuck Hagel to lead the Defense Department, staging the first filibuster against a president's choice to head the Pentagon. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) called the move "a shame" as he announced on the Senate floor that he was unable to reach an agreement with the top Republican on the Armed Services Committee to avoid such a delay. Reid filed a motion to end the filibuster and said he expected to vote on it Friday. LINK

USA Today's Catalina Camia: " Senate gets ready for Chuck Hagel showdown" Chuck Hagel will not get the support of a prominent Republican moderate as the Senate gets ready to consider his nomination as secretary of Defense. Amid talk of a possible filibuster against President Obama's nominee, Sen. Susan Collins said Wednesday she will oppose Hagel, a former Nebraska senator and Republican. LINK

Politico's Kate Nocera and Patrick Reis: " Elizabeth Warren's silent Senate approach" When the newest senators lunched together for the first time last November, their biggest star immediately tried to flee. As a flock of reporters approached Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat turned and engaged fellow freshman Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), in a fake conversation. LINK

CBS quarterly profit rises on advertising, cable fees

(Reuters) - CBS Corp reported a higher profit for the fourth quarter on Thursday, boosted by political advertising at its flagship broadcast network and higher affiliate and subscription fees at cable channels.

Net earnings rose to $393 million, or 60 cents a share, from $370 million, or 55 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue rose 2 percent to $3.61 billion.

On an adjusted basis, CBS reported earnings of $414 million, up from $377 million a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share reached 64 cents, the company said.

Content licensing and distribution revenue fell 7 percent from a year earlier, primarily due to the timing of payments for online streaming of CBS shows, the company said.

CBS also announced plans to repurchase an additional $1 billion of its Class B common stock in 2013, a near doubling of its earlier buyback commitment.

CBS shares fell 1.7 percent to $42.20 in after-hours trading, down from their close at $42.94 on the New York Stock Exchange.

CBS Sports Wire: Kentucky's Noel to have MRI on left knee after X-rays are negative

CBSSports.com wire reports

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel was scheduled for an MRI on his left knee Wednesday after X-rays were negative.

While the initial news was good for the Wildcats, they nervously await the results of the test on their star player.

The 6-foot-10 forward was hurt during No. 25 Kentucky's 69-52 loss at No. 7 Florida on Tuesday night. Noel ran into the padded basket support with about eight minutes remaining after blocking Mike Rosario's layup from behind.

He landed awkwardly on the leg, dropped to the floor and started screaming while clutching his knee. The top recruit left the arena in a wheelchair with his leg in a brace and was taken to a hospital for X-rays Tuesday night.

Noel returned home with the team.

The nation's leading shot blocker at 4.5 per game coming in, Noel had eight points, six rebounds and three blocks before getting hurt.

"I'm physically sick right now for him," coach John Calipari said after the game. "What I'm hoping is it's not the extreme. I'm hoping it's some sort of twist, but we don't know."

Noel's injury comes just as defending national champion Kentucky (17-7, 8-3 Southeastern Conference) appeared to be gaining some footing after a lackluster start. The Wildcats began the week ranked for the first time since falling out Dec. 3 following consecutive losses to Notre Dame and Baylor.

Kentucky struggled early on in SEC play, losing to Texas A&M and Alabama, but had recovered to win a season-best five straight before Tuesday.

Noel's stellar defense was a big reason for the Wildcats' surge. He entered the game with three consecutive double-doubles and on a four-week run as the conference's top freshman. In his previous five games, Noel had blocked 26 shots.

Not only does his injury throw Kentucky's rotation into doubt with 7-foot freshman Willie Cauley-Stein as its only other big post player, but a lengthy absence seriously damages the Wildcats' postseason chances.

"He's a vital part of our team, so we hope for the best," forward Kyle Wiltjer said.

Considered the nation's top recruit last season, Noel led a four-man freshman class also including Archie Goodwin and Alex Poythress that was expected to pick up where last year's championship team left off. Noel has often been compared to national player of the year Anthony Davis because of his size and shot-blocking ability.

While Noel downplayed the comparison, he made clear his pursuit of breaking Davis' single-season school record of 186 blocks set last year. A Kentucky-record 12 blocks during an 87-74 victory at Mississippi on Jan. 29 put him slightly ahead of Davis' pace, which was set over 40 games.

More importantly, that game helped re-establish the Wildcats' credentials as an NCAA tournament team.

The Grand Canyon And 1-day Smooth Water Float Trips

White-water rapids are non-existent with Grand Canyon rafting. Smooth-water float tours are great! Perfect for travelers of all ages, these one-day trips are the ultimate way to explore the canyon from the inside out.

Tours start out from Grand Canyon National Park and Tusayan, AZ, the town just outside the Park's main gate. Choose to go by bus or plane to Page, AZ, where you'll end up making an incredible two-mile drive through a tunnel to the base of Glen Canyon Dam.

Climb in for a 15.5- mile float trip with the smooth ride of the Colorado River under the inflatable motorized passenger river raft. Horseshoe Bend appears right away to remind tourists why it is so famous. The ancient Puebloans made petroglyphs on the walls of the cliff, and today the raft will stop to let you view them.

Questions about the canyon? Ask your professional river guide. They have studied Grand Canyon history and know the reasons that certain types of wildlife live there as well as how the beautiful sandstone cliffs came to be and their effect on the blue-green waters.

The float tour takes approximately 2.5 hours, breaking for lunch at the midway point and then continuing to historic Lee's Ferry. Here, you'll transfer to an air-conditioned deluxe motor coach and begin your journey back to the South Rim. You cross the Navajo Indian Reservation on the way back, as well as enjoy the beauty of the Painted Desert. Don't miss the opportunity for genuine Indian crafts at Cameron Trading Post, a stop on your return.

Plan on a complete day for smooth water float tours, which run April to November. Trips start near the crack of dawn. Nearly three hours is used by the float trip. I suggest using lots of sunscreen for tourists during the hot May through September months. Avoid sunburn and overheating by wearing a sunhat and comfortable clothes. The water is tempting, so bring along a suit for swimming. Stay hydrated with the free juice and water found on the raft.

All-inclusive water-rafting trips include such conveniences as free pickup and delivery at any of the Tusayan and Grand Canyon Village hotels, park fees, lunch, a guide, and travel in a beautiful motor coach. The Grand Canyon Airport is another option as a pickup point for your trip.

Bus-rafting packages are the most economical way and start at $170 per person. At $329 and up, airplane-rafting trips are popular. To get the best price, shop online. Savings of up to 35 percent is possible with Internet bookings, according to research that I have done. Booking these trips online is much safer than you found in the past. There's never been a problem with any of the multitudes of raft trips I've purchased from the Web.

To really know the Grand Canyon is to go under the rim and ride the river. No need for pro status to enjoy Grand Canyon rafting. If you are looking for the more calm waters of the Colorado River, take a bus or plane and venture upstream. The gentle water brushes your feet. Relax and watch the condors soar. Impressive old Indian drawings are visible from the shore. Enjoy the freedom. As one of the smooth water float tours, it's going to be the highlight of your vacation.

Personality plus: Researchers find link to energy rates

Feb. 14, 2013 ? People with a more resilient personality profile are more likely to have greater energy levels.

That's one of the conclusions from a four-year research project led by Antonio Terracciano, associate professor of geriatrics at the Florida State University College of Medicine. His findings are outlined in "Personality, Metabolic Rate and Aerobic Capacity," published in PLOS ONE, a peer-reviewed, open access journal.

With funding from the National Institute on Aging (NIA), Terracciano, College of Medicine Assistant Professor Angelina Sutin and NIA colleagues studied the relationship between personality, metabolic rate and aerobic capacity.

Past studies have demonstrated that personality traits and cardiorespiratory fitness in older adults are reliable predictors of health and longevity. But Terracciano wanted to know more about the link between psychological traits and cardiorespiratory fitness. Could it be that certain personality traits predict the extent of a person's cardiorespiratory fitness?

Or, to take it a step further, are certain personality traits more desirable when it comes to leading a longer, healthier life?

"We tested implicit assumptions that individuals with certain personality dispositions have different metabolic and energetic profiles," Terracciano said. "For example, do those who are assertive and bold expend more energy? Do those who are depressed or emotionally vulnerable have a lower aerobic capacity and less energy? And do conscientious individuals with an active and healthy lifestyle have more energy?"

The answer, on all counts, appears to be yes.

The results indicate that a person's basic rate of metabolism is mostly unrelated to their personality traits. However, a resilient personality profile makes a difference when it comes to aerobic capacity or maximal sustained energy expenditure. The study involved 642 participants, ages 31 to 96, all part of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, an ongoing multidisciplinary study at the NIA.

Terracciano and his team assessed personality traits to include measures of neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness. Lower scores on neuroticism and higher scores on the other four dimensions are thought to be a more resilient personality profile.

Subjects were tested to measure their energy expenditure at rest and at normal and maximal sustained walking speeds. Those identified as more neurotic required a longer time to complete the walking task and had lower aerobic capacity.

Conversely, those who scored lower for neuroticism and higher for conscientiousness, extraversion or openness had better aerobic capacity and required less energy to complete the same distance.

"Those with a more resilient personality profile were not just faster and with greater aerobic capacity, but they were also more efficient in their energy expenditure while walking," Terracciano said. "That is, they could go faster while using relatively less energy.

"Of the five domains of personality, we found no association with agreeableness," Terracciano said. "This is somewhat surprising given that antagonistic individuals are likely to engage in health risk behaviors, such as smoking, and they tend to have thicker arteries and are at greater risk of cardiovascular disease."

The results may indicate that aerobic capacity is one mechanism through which our personality traits contribute to better health and longevity. Also, greater aerobic capacity in an individual may be a factor in shaping his or her personality, especially when it comes to behaviors that require a higher level of energy, such as extraversion.

Furthermore, the findings suggest potential pathways through which our personality is linked to health outcomes, such as obesity and longevity.

Terracciano said the results highlight the links between personality traits and cardiorespiratory fitness in older adults.

"Both are powerful predictors of disability and mortality," he said. "I believe this study is informative on the role of psychological traits in lifestyles that are associated with successful aging."

Are you going around in circles in your job search? | One2One ...

Many jobseekers feel this way. You?ve prepared your resume, seen jobs of interest, fired off an application and wait with bated breath for the response, only to fail.

In many of these cases jobseekers are making the same mistakes over and over with each application. After missing out repeatedly, it?s time to stand back and analyse your approach, the materials you are using and what you are aiming for, BUT from the perspective of the employer, not yourself. This will help enormously to stop making the same mistakes and to start moving forward.

It can never be said frequently enough ? if you are applying for jobs where you meet all the essential criteria and you are continually missing out on gaining an interview, then the answer to your problem will undoubtedly lie in your resume.

Similarly, if you make it to interview and consistently miss out on job offers, then the answer could be in your interview technique.

Albert Einstein said it well when he stated that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Don?t get caught in the cycle of sending the same resume that you haven?t had any success with ? fix it.

Don?t continue to miss out on offers after interviews ? find out what you can improve.

There is no such thing as the perfect job search or the perfect job seeker. Sure, some execute a job search better than others but they weren?t born with this skill ? they researched, learnt how to do things, refined their techniques and amended their approach until they hit on the right formula for them. You can do the same.

So if you are in a job search and the scenarios above resonate with you, then I challenge you to take a step back and cast a critical eye on your materials and techniques.

What can you do to improve,

to reignite your search,

to start making headway?
