UN official says Haiti needs a registration system (AP)

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti ? A senior U.N. official says Haiti needs a national registration system to better protect its citizens at home and abroad.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres tells The Associated Press that a central database would improve conditions for thousands of Haitians living outside their homeland. It would help them open bank accounts, marry and secure property titles.

Guterres spoke Wednesday night after visits to Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic. He says he pushed for the registration system in talks with officials in both countries.
