Polls Show Overwhelming Support For Online Gaming and Bingo
Online gambling is a controversial issue in the United States. Some politicians rant and rail about the supposed ?evils? of online gaming and believe they represent the views of a majority of Americans. Unfortunately for these politicians several reputable polls say otherwise. It is hard to understand why any government would want to criminalize something as innocuous as online bingo and poker. Despite current poll results these politicians continue to pander to a tiny minority of special interest groups and anti gambling extremists. Here are the results of recent polls with some very surprising results;
The first poll was conducted by Zogby and has a margin of error of +/- 0.6 percentage points. Zogby interviewed 30,054 likely voters for this poll. This poll was conducted just as the US congress was considering legislation to ban online gambling including online bingo. When asked if it was appropriate for the government to dictate what adults do on the internet in private an overwhelming majority, 78%, said no. Sadly 13% would give the government the right to interfere in private behavior.

When asked if taxpayer dollars should be used to prevent adults from gambling online 77% said no and only 11% said yes.
The Peter D. Hart Research Associates Poll taken at about the same time showed similar results. When asked this question ?Gambling is a question of personal choice. The government should not be telling Americans what they should or should not be doing with their own time and money.? 83% of respondents agreed while only 13% disagreed.
It is interesting to note that the percentage of people opposed to online gaming is very similar in both polls and indicates that only a very tiny minority are opposed to online gambling while an overwhelming majority believes Americans should have freedom of choice. Sadly despite these figures the US government went ahead and disregarded the wishes of a large majority. Thumbing their nose at a majority of citizens anti gambling extremists tacked ant gambling legislation on to a safe ports bill and presented it in a late night session of congress with no room for debate. It should be noted that Senator Kyl, one of the sponsors of the anti gambling law, is now one of the most vocal opponents of the new legislation. Recently proposed legislation will remedy this unhappy situation and soon Americans will be able to play an exciting game of online bingo from the privacy and comfort of their own homes.
