By using tiny beads of special resin that resemble sand, water treatment professionals can (1) remove hardness ions in a process called "softening" in which calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium or (2) demineralization, using ion exchange resins which have the ability to remove virtually all dissolved minerals from water, producing final product that may be considerably lower in dissolved ions than distilled water.
